Trees, Bark and Twigs.
I love trees , particularly in wintertime when they areen deshabilleand the wonderful tracery of bare branches is outlined against an evening sky . I love watching the buds swell in former springtime . I nibble armful of sticky buds from the Equus caballus chestnut and watch them unfurl in water .
Aesculus hippocastanum
Magnolia buds wrapped up in sage - unripe velvet grow plumper every day .

I am golden that there were mature tree when we come here but I wish I could have chosen them , because some of them are not suitable for belittled gardens . I have a little copse at the bottom of the garden which I imagine plant itself . subject field maples , oak tree and wild apple trees probably seed themselves from the hedgerow . Conkers for the two enormous horse chestnut were probably brought from the churchyard by squirrels . They are far too big for a garden but they are magnificent trees and each class I interest about the effects of horse chestnut leaf miner and even worse , bleeding pestilence . There were only four cases of this in the UK in 2000 and now most of the trees in the land are affected to some extent . I do n’t wish the smell of this one in particular .

Apples and pears were planted in the woodlet many years ago , but the number of vast plum trees round the garden probably planted themselves . This one throw up the will to dwell in the storm we had latterly .
Weeping willows with their invasive rootage are really only suitable for very expectant garden . This one carelessly drops branches every winter and causes a keen tidy sum of work . I would never have planted it . Still , I do front onward to its first tinge of green bud in spring .

I love pubic louse apple trees and the yellowMalus‘Golden Hornet ’ is pretty but if I had been look up I would have tell ; ‘ If you want yellow yield , please plant the lovelyMalus ‘ Comtessa de Paris ’ because her yield hangs on until after Christmas instead of going brown on the tree . Or how about ‘ Butterball ’ which is always gorgeous and so to a great extent laden with fruit ? ’ But OK , ‘ Golden Hornet ’ has its moments .
Malus‘Golden Hornet ’
reader of my blog will know that I dislike the huge cherry tree which dominates the sentiment from the house and offends me with its blowsy blossoms and its alarming habit of dropping branches even when it ’s not windy . It ’s probably find fault up its bad drug abuse from the crying willow tree . I do n’t screw if the cherry red is ‘ Kansan ’ or ‘ Hokusai ’ , but whichever it is I do n’t wish it . I ’m a cerise efflorescence snoot . If only they had asked me I would have said:‘Try the daintyPrunus‘Pandora ’ or ‘ Pink Perfection ’ or if you desire a vainglorious Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , plant the gorgeous white ‘ Shirotae ’ or the double Gean , Prunus avium‘Plena ’ .

Aesculus hippocastrum
Anyway , now thanks to the audacious and athletic George , the Pink Knicker Blossom tree diagram has been chop back and the trunk remains as a climbing frame forRosa‘Blush Rambler ’ .
So which Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree am I thankful for?Acer drummondiihas pallid lemon vary leaves and sitting under it on a hot summertime ’s day is like sit down in a testis of sunshine . Now the cherry tree tree has been chopped down I have an uninterrupted survey of it from the house .
Acer platanoides‘Drummondii ’ in summer .

The weeping verruca birch treeBetula verrucosa‘Pendula ’ with its warty trunk is full of character reference and the long tail tits enjoy it too .

The walnut tree has adorable fissured barque , but squirrel run through all the walnuts , every one .

The Winter Garden .
I have planted quite a few tree and bush in this garden but the single I am enjoying at the moment are the one I prefer for their beautiful barque or colorful twig in wintertime .

Malus‘Golden Hornet’
I created the winter garden three years ago and now it is maturing nicely . Prunus serrula looks as if it has been milled . Behind it is the red stemmed dogwood;Cornus alba‘Siberica ’ .
Prunus serrula
Acer griseumis a beautiful cinammon colour and has lovely peeling bark too .

Acer griseum
Birches are a particular dearie of mine . Last twelvemonth I found a group of snowy white Betula jacquemontii to add to the mature group at the bottom of the garden . In the wintertime gardenBetula albo - sinensis‘Pink Champagne’is maturing nicely .
Betula albo - sinensis‘Pink Champagne ’

This barque is pinkish but for really red you ca n’t beat the redAcer pennsylvanicum‘Erythrocladum’ . This is one of the Snake barque maple and very slow ontogeny .
Acer pennsylvaticum‘Erythrocladum
Nearby the bushy Acerpalmatum‘Sango kaku ’ looks more showy .

Acer palmatum’Sango kaku ’
You ca n’t beat dogwoods for coloured twigs . As well asCornus alba‘Siberica ’ I haveCornus alba‘Baton Rouge ’ which I call back is the best red .
My favored cornel at the instant is the orangeCornus sanguinea‘Midwinter Fire ’ . It look good withHamamelis‘Jelena ’ and the calcareous stems of the touch brambleRubusthibetanus .

Acer platanoides‘Drummondii’ in summer.
Cornus sericea‘Flaviramea is a strong growing yellowish green . Here it is acquire behind the evergreenOsmanthus heterophyllus‘Goshiki ’ which look a bit holly- like ’ only pretty .
Cornus sericea‘kelseyi ’ is much more compact and has ok branches .
Cornus sericea ‘ Kelesyii ’

Betula verrucosa‘Pendula’
Actually there is another dogwood tree on my indirect request leaning and I think it is the best yet . It is called ‘ Anny ’s Winter Orange ’ and I sha n’t stay until I have tracked it down .
I quite like eccentric twigs in wintertime . Bowles put the misrepresented Pomaderris apetala , Corylus avellana‘Contorta ’ in a special bed for unknown industrial plant which he called the lunatic asylum .
Coorylus avellana‘Contorta ’

Juglans regia
I can sort of see what he means . I like it in winter but I am not so keen in summer when I think it looks diseased . I wonder what Bowles would have made out of the crazy , tangled brown stem ofMuehlenbeckia astoni .

I am not too keen on conifers butAbies koreanais very graceful and when it is mature has lovely upright violet - regal cones like candle .

Define “ smaller garden . ” I expect we have very unlike frame of reference as your garden look huge to me . That said , I empathize your positions on Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree selection . It likely come as no surprise that I ’d never have pick out my mimosa ( Albizia julibrissin ) for my garden , much less for a polar position at the top of my slope ; however , it ’s there and found and , as supercede it raise the specter of challenge under our view conservation ordinance even if it were feasible to accomplish without destabilise my back slope , I endeavor to accept its positives while minimizing its negatives the best I can . That said , if I had a free sovereignty to plant whatever I like as you do , I ’d certainly eradicate it and perhaps the Heteromeles arbutifolia ( Heteromeles arbutifolia ) too , even if the latter is the designated “ prescribed ” native plant of Los Angeles .
Your winter garden has grow together very nicely and you ’ve bring some great inherited trees . finger crossed for your horse chestnut ! I ca n’t wait to learn more about your shiny unexampled glasshouse !
