These are the continuing ocean trip of the USS Tomato . Boldly splitting infinitives , exploring fresh mixed bag and chiefly trying to dodge the foe – the Late Blight Empire .
My two primary weapons against the dreaded blight are :
I am try out seven multifariousness this year . Four are cherries , three are regular sized varieties .
Sungold . I sowed these very betimes in January . I ’ve potted them on doubly , they are in 1L mass now . They did not delight the late temperature fluctuations , and they brood a bit on transplanting to the bigger pots but thankfully , most of them seem glad enough now , not too leggy .
Roma & Gardeners Delight . Sowed a bit later on in January , these were in 7 centimetre pots having been goad out ab initio into cum tray . I do n’t have intercourse why but all of them succumbed to an unpleasant and fairly sudden decease . I wonder if I put too much fertiliser in the potting mix . I have consign the lot to the compost heap , 18 piddling ex - plant . Boo hoo .
Tumbling Bella . Hmm well . These were in a tray that was veracious on the leading sharpness of the heated bench when the Beast From the East struck a duet of weeks ago . Although I had put some wool down as additional shelter , lows of -8 ° snow were enough to fall into place my defense and this tray was a lilliputian frosted as a event . I lost the seedlings in the front half of the tray . The hindmost ones are hanging in there and beginning to recoup some poise . I ’ve pot them on to 7 cm pots , no extra plant food this time , just in event .
Sweet Millions , Shirley and Money Maker . smite by the same chill as poor Bella .
Since I seem to be skin with many of my early sowings I have taken the precaution of sowing a 2nd batch . These are indoors on a sunny window cill , on a heated disseminator . Perhaps I should have begin them all like this two months ago . Never beware , we ’ll see .
Sowing tomatoes early was always a mo of a gamble but I thought I would primarily be look at with low brightness level point . I had not anticipated such inclement eastern weather . Mixed resultant role so far then . How are your tomato doing ?
