There are loads of green Lycopersicon esculentum that I do n’t expect to mature . Will they end their life as pickles ? The legendary fried green tomatoes ? Green tomato chutney ? The possibilities are almost dateless , if you expect the interwebs . I ’m still getting lots of green beans , but the peppers and brinjal are pretty much done .

But then there ’s that one minuscule spaghetti squelch I ’m still root for , and some lettuces still linger , despite the heat . The basil is still going strong ( primarily because I am diligently pinching off the flowers ) , and there are even a few blueberry left — a spot dry but great in salad !

Mybeloved kaleis enjoying a resurgence , and I gestate it will continue to produce through the wintertime . The artichoke are starting to sprout again , a few forget garlic cloves come along to be commit up newfangled shoots , and the strawberries are pumping out their declination Cartesian product .

Watching the wax and wane of the Fortress Garden reminds me of how cyclic things truly are . presently I will be tick to see if the stopple spawn I installed this spring into new - cut oak logs are producing theshiitake and lion ’s mane mushroomsI have been dream of .

I’m harvesting the last of the tomatoes and pulling the plants out of the garden.

So , instead of get to close up workshop in the garden , I ’m ramping up for the next phase . Sure , I ’ll have to sacrifice a few still - bring on plant to make room for the Modern crew , but the hope of the new crop make it all OK . Not glamorous , but it will keep me off the couch . I love my couch , but a picayune goes a long way .

It will happen suddenly and soon : One day , it ’s blistering red-hot and I ’m in shorts and a tank top , instal seeds , and the next , that snack is in the atmosphere , the light shifts , and it ’s officially and undeniably fall . We ’ll be lug firewood onto the porch , make stew , taking nighttime pass in the quiver air , and eat way too many small itty bitty drinking chocolate bar steal from the nestling post - Halloween .

I bang the fall , even though I ’m still not happy about the whole “ fall back ” thing , but I ’m consider starting a small revolution around that . Maybe next year .
