Six on Saturday. Winter Cheer.
Over Christmas I enjoy early snowdrop and adorableNarcissus‘Cedric Morris ’ shining out in the bleakness of the December garden . But I try not to look at the little noses of bulbs appear everywhere and I void my winter garden . Once we are into January then I can revel in the delights down here and if I have n’t wander by peeping earlier I get to enjoy the full encroachment of the winter treasures . I knew the enchantress hazel were come out but I require to waitress until they were at their best before I saw them . So in the beginning this week when the Dominicus was shining I locomote down for my January kickshaw and play in the wintertime garden which has come to life-time and is go to look at its effective for the next four months . And the hag hazels are looking terrific .
‘ Jelena ’ looks wonderful with a backdrop ofCornus‘Winter Fire ’
I opine my deary is the well - named ‘ Marmalade ’ .

The fragrance of Witch Hazels is catch but is quite knotty , they really need to be brought indoors for the full impact . But never mind , I have two very fragrant shrubs at their best right now . The first isDaphne‘Perfume Princess ’ I say it is at its safe , but this lovely daphne is rarely not bloom , although winter into saltation is its prime clip .
Chimonanthus praecoxis rather a nondescript shrub and is drill in summer . But in winter it comes alive with yellow hook - like peak with maroon inwardness . The scent is exquisite and I have a couple of George W. Bush so I always have enough to pick for fragrant bouquet in the house .
Two wintertime flowering cherry red are search lovely right now . They have such dainty flowers that I like them much better than some of the blowzy spring ones . They are the whitePrunus x subhirtella‘Autumnalis ’ and the pink form ‘ Rosea ’

I always thought thatsasanquacamellias were supposed to bloom in late autumn and when I buy the adorable flushed ‘ Yuletide ’ I hoped it would bloom for Christmas . But I read that this camellia is a cross betweenCamellia japonicaandCamellia sasanqua , it should be calledCamellia x vernalis . I do n’t mind what its call because this picayune camelia is a beauty and it brightens up a January day in my garden with its bright red flower , yellow-bellied stamens and calendered leaf .
I have quite a few snowdrops out and I am trusted some of them will make their way onto my blog this season but I have some former hellebores out and one which is looking particularly respectable is ‘ Helleborus‘Leona . ’ So I will finish with this . This one has very large flowers and unlike so many of her sisters she faces you instead of depend down at the ground .
The winter garden has mature nicely since I give it a few long time ago and there is so much else to enjoy out here ; not just flowers but beautiful coloured stems as well . I shall be revisit it very soon to show you more of my winter treasures . In the meanwhile I am joiningThe Propagatorwith his popular meme , Six on Saturday . In case you call back I still have n’t mastered count up to six ( I know I unremarkably slip in too many ) but this hebdomad , I am number the Witch Hazels as one and so that make it six . I call back .

I ’m impressed that you ’re able to bide your fourth dimension before explore your garden for wintertime flush . I ’m jealous of your witch hazel , which I ’ve always found intriguing ( without any clue as to what they bet like when they ’re not in blossom ) but I ’ve no chance at all of grow them in my mood . I ’m on a regular basis out scan for color in my “ cool time of year ” garden . Yesterday , I get word that Camellia ‘ Taylor ’s Perfection ’ has produced its first bloom of youth . ‘ Taylor ’s ’ has C. japonica in its parentage but I understand it ’s formally classified as a C. williamsii hybrid . I have a Daphne and a couple hellebore in bud but my Aloe blooms are splashier 😉
Every time I see yours and Cathy ’s witch hazels I recall that I must plant another – ‘ Ruby Glow ’ is calling out to me . ‘ Leona ’ looks a most striking hellebore and looking at you confront on is so more sociable .
You believably have lots of other parts of the garden to appear at , to expect so long to catch the first flowers in your Spring garden . You have a endearing Six for us this calendar week . Leona is such a racy deep colour : a actual treat . Thanks for share-out .
