Six on Saturday. Magnolia Magic.

Really , magnolia should be at number one on my Top Ten April Blooms lean because I am crazy about them , but I have been relish these six for a duo of calendar week now and it is time to celebrate them before they go over . Besides , I require to join in with the pop meme , Six on Saturday .

In my premature garden I had twenty three mature magnolias planted by the previous owner who had a glasshouse there . Every one had their lower branches pegged down into the soil so that they would put down roots and that is the most reliable and easy agency to propagate them . I did trying growing one from seed and after seven eld hold off the blossom were small and disappointing .

Our present garden did n’t have one individual magnolia when we make out eight and a half yr ago , but you may be sure it has now . At the last tally there were eleven . I have heard complaints about the transience of meter of their blooming but if you plan them cautiously you’re able to have a successiveness of blooms for calendar week .

Magnolia soulangeana

Magnolia soulangeanais one which you see in every garden , but not in mine , so I do n’t let in it in my six . It is beautiful but it takes up a lot of room and anyway it take a few years to produce flush and there are other varieties which I retrieve are more interesting . Its former flowers are often ruined by hoar . The ones round here are all face brown and freeze damaged now . In any case it learn many year to look as in effect as this one .

Magnolia soulangeana

The first magnolia into bloom in my garden is splendid ‘ Leonard Messel ’ with fluttery , tattery , pink petals . I institute this tree seven year ago and it already looks wonderful . ‘ Leonard Messel ’ blooms when very young and the flowers though early on seem to be reasonably frost immune .

Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’

‘ Leonard Messel ’ was bred from the starry floweredMagnolia stellatawhich I also have . This   is a dull develop tree or bush which produce to about 2.5 metres so it is suitable for a small garden . Mine is a standard .

Magnolia ‘Wada’s Memory’'

I have already prove bud of my darkMagnolia‘Black Tulip ’ . The bloom remind me more of water lilies   rather than tulip . They are luscious   cryptic pink chalice .   I was worried the frost would damage them but they have survived quite a few frosty nights unscathed .

My latest purchase is a white bloom one call ‘ Wada ’s Memory ’ . The bloom hang limply like pure blank hanky or ashen doves if you have a more romanticist play of judgement . I get word a mature one in the botanical garden at East Bergholt   last year and I had to have one . It grows to about 4 metre and makes a pyramidical shape which is covered in bloom of youth . It is tight grow and blooms freely when young .

Mine will take some years to reach this superlative but never mind , here it is , it looks lovely right now .

I like I had bring frozen cutting of all my magnolia but I did bring a piece of one of them , Magnolia lilifora‘Nigra ’ and it is now a prissy little tree . It is quite late flowering and has really dark flowers , not black-market as the name suggests but very sour pink .

My best-loved magnolia has huge long lasting , pink flowers . I first saw it at the previous Princess Sturdza ’s fantastic garden , ‘ Le Vasterival ’ near Dieppe in France . So many wonderful plants have come from here .   When I visited , Princess Sturdza said that ‘ Star warfare ’ was her favourite magnolia and I have to agree .

Magnolia‘Star war ’

Like many howling magnolia it was breed in New Zealand and was move over its name because the tepals aim in all direction . One parent wasMagnolia campbelliiwhich has the most tremendous blossom , but in the UK it is generally only institute in Cornwall because it is very early flowering and the frosts zap the flower . It makes a huge Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and takes many years to produce its first bloom . ‘ Star Wars ’ prime are almost as self-aggrandising but they are produced on very young trees .

Here is my tree in its 2d twelvemonth , 2012 . I was enthralled when it produced eleven flowers .

Now it is bet wonderful and I ca n’t even count the blooms . I do n’t have a garden with a view , but here I can apply a mo of borrowed landscape in the form of the ancient Cedar of Lebanon tree in the Old Rectory garden , it makes a adorable backdrop .

magnolia like an acid to neutral ground and they hate root disturbance . They do n’t take kindly to pruning . But really they are very easy and undemanding . After all , they have been around long , long before we were here . They were here when dinosaur roll the earth . In fact scientist have discovered that the very first flowers were magnolias of some kind . Ca n’t you just imagine a pterodactyl flying past this one in the arboretum at East Bergholt ?

Six on Saturday is host byThe Propagator . Do join in with the ever maturate group of blogger celebrating it .

Since I entered the world of garden blogs nearly 10 years ago , I ’ve been captivate with Magnolias , although the only species you generally find in my orbit is the Magnolia grandiflora , which can be a messy tree diagram . ( I inherit one with my current garden . ) I ’ve seriously reckon investing in ‘ Black Tulip ’ but I do n’t do it where I ’d put it and , as my grime is definitely on the alkaline conclusion of the spectrum , I ’m not certain I could make it felicitous . While I debate , I ’ll revel your lovely collection .

Oh gosh , Magnolias are so extra . It always seems like spring has genuinely established herself when the Magnolias bloom . The buds around here are plump , and just a few more warm Day will aid them to bug out . Dreamy photograph !

Could I recommend that magnolia - lovers next spring go to the garden on Lake Maggiore planted by a remote relation of my husband ? Villa Taranto was bought by the late Neil MacEacharn in the 1930s and – credibly because of the lakeside micro - clime – has both the largest camelia and magnolia I ’ve ever see , and indeed more variety show of magnolia than I ’d been aware of . The garden is opened every mean solar day . Elizabeth
