This is my Warsaw Nike clematis . It is in Group 3 , a Summer bloomer that blooms on Modern wood on into Fall . ( it is often sold as Group 2 )

Which Clematis Pruning Group
This method acting will also influence on Group 1 & 2 , you may give some blooms on any of them the first time of year after the restoration prune but it will give you top to bottom blooms . In the tenacious running play you get more blooms and a prettier plant .
take down : if you have a group 1 clematis do some research on the particular distinguish variety . Each one can have singular preferences on pruning . But if you only prune back some canes as I show here then you should be fine on most . Group 1 typically only bloom on old Mrs. Henry Wood so keep that in creative thinker .

When to Prune Clematis
This method acting can be done from November on into March . I prefer November as I can access mine then , come any later on and the ground could be covered in C. P. Snow until June.(when start a new garden I do so in Fall as remark in this article , Start a Lazy Gal ’s Garden )
This past Summer my Warsaw only bloom way high at the top and did not re - blossom as prolifically as yr prior .
Notice the maze at the top of the lattice and on the porch rails . If you follow it down you notice the bare woody vines towards the fundament .

I have since learned that Warsaw Nike is really a pruning group 3 clematis and blooms on fresh wood . Many suppliers have this Michigan - marked as a group 2 except for a very reputable cultivator I get many of my clematis from .
How to Prune Clematis
I start by cutting the entire top back by a third . I just used the porch floor as my guideline and cut across the tangle of vines .
This helps me to see which vine follow from which canes at the bottom .
The bottom near the primer coat is grow over with other plants which I require to remove to get a clear picture of the fundament of the clematis and what I am work with . All those plant require to be removed .

Nothing here is darling so I start yanking them out and toss into the compost pail . ( note : if you struggle with a fungus that can kill back clematis do not compost your vines )
Clearing it all off shows me this …
There are 5 hard woody vines coming from the al-Qaida and one small one that is very limber .

I pull the skinny limber one to the side so as not to accidentally curve it during my raid with thepruners .
Later you will see what I am travel to do with that farseeing skinny vine
I cut one of the chummy canes back to the ground then one 12 inches from the ground .

Right nowmy favorite trimmer are these prunersI learned about from a rosarian who trust by them and once I try out them I had to have them or I have usedFiskars Bypass Pruning Shearswith success . For big vine I use theLoppers(these get along in really handy when I pruned back the declamatory canes on my Climbing Rose )
This will encourage fresh increase lower on the clematis . fresh increase is a good thing on a type 3 clematis since they bloom on new growth .
The next cane , the center one is foreshorten at about 3 feet foresighted .

The cane on the left is one I entrust longer , it die in behind the trellis and get along out at the base of the porch floor .
The cane on the right-hand threads its way behind the treillage and Hydra over to the ripe side and back out around the corner , I leave it to emerge from the other side but snub it back to the storey base as well .
Why Prune Clematis at Different Lengths
By cutting the canes at different distance I will get new growth and blooms all along the plant life from the al-Qaida to the top .
If you only have 1 or 2 vine coming from the priming , switch off it to about 6 inch from the reason . Cutting it will further your clematis to send up more vines from the root .
With new clematis , I burn it back the first two grow season so it sends up Lot of vine from the stem .

What did I do With the Last Vine?
So what did I do with the last vine left on the ground ?
I bury it along the basis , not deep , just under the soil .. you’re able to see the leaves on the left wing and under the barren dirt is the vine .
This will remain this way all wintertime and if everything go as planned it will root in more than one position along the vine …

like this one below … I live it does n’t seem that convincing but towards the center where there are some dark-brown parting is a clematis that rooted where it touch the ground .
I will dig this up and replant it elsewhere after severing the vine from the female parent industrial plant .
This is called layering .. see all about how I spread Clematis by Layering here . You will screw it !
