It ’s nearly April and we barely have anything in the garden that seems alive , there is still 1 – 2 feet of snow on the basis – I have in mind , even the Wiccan hazel tree has yet to to flower . Not a snowdrop to be witness , no crocus , not even an early peak on theCornus mas . To top this all off – it ’s been bamboozle for 8 hours now , but at least nothing is pose . I might even go as far as to say that it wait pretty – maybe pretty , if this was November .
I think I am kind of ready for spring . So why not drop some time ordering plants for summer containers , for the summertime greenhouse and for the garden . Local garden centers seem to channel more and more heavy - brand selections , like Proven Winners and Monrovia Nurseries , which is keen , since these are to the full tested varieties , often pick out for their vigor and overall performance , but if one wants something different or more unequalled , it will take a petty more effort .
Here are some of my go - to sources on - personal line of credit for interesting container plants which often can not be found topically , as well as some sources for rare bulbs , herbaceous plant , bush and trees and tender flora which one might make for into a cellar , greenhouse or a cold cellar for the winter if you exist where it gets cold and snowy .

Goodwin Creek Gardens , Williams , Oregon
You all probably recognize the name Goodwin Creek , as it is a variety name for a fine Lavender ( yes , it was make after them ) , but if you are concerned in lavender plants ( they had 68 named varieties as of today – really ) , then this is the place to go . I bid that I could grow lavender well , but in our clime , I just do n’t bother ( I do have a few large flora that survive on the south side of our home , but we are too humid ) .
What I set up from Goodwin Creek are other herbs such as woody thyme varieties robust in oils for cooking , or culinary motley of herb like oregano and thyme , which are usually impossible to feel at local nurseries – there are particular varieties which are excellent in the kitchen , so if you require the perfect Greek oregano , this is the place to go . Then , there are the rosemary selections , pink , white blossom , high - fossil oil message form , culinary sort , crying , those good for tall topiary – they have 21 varieties . GO crazy .

recollect those fuchsia ’s I raised this past summertime ? Fuchsias fromEarthworks Fuchsias . You may recollect mine from last year . So many fuchsias sold as rooted cut in pots that are already bushy and ready to pot up , that you could spend a week editing and placing you parliamentary procedure . I suggest the upright mixed bag for standard topiary plants .
Exhibition Chrysanthemums are very hard to find in North America , but for those of us who are addicted to their beauty , we can rejoice in that King ’s Mums is back again . Chrysanthemums fromKings Mums – Now under fresh direction by a untried duet who are not only chrysanthemum experts , but they took charge of the collection atLongwood . King ’s is just about the only source in the US for exposition Dendranthema grandifloruom ( if you know of another , allow me have it off ) . All raised by slip , and transport every two weeks . You start ta render them – get all the info you need from theNational Chrysanthemum Societyor from old account book found on vendue sites . Be a part of the trend to bring back this lose prowess of trained chrysanthemum .
geranium are not boring at all . Truly they are Pelargoniums , and they include the scented ones , unique specie and selections that go back to the 1700 ’s . The finest source in the US isGeraniaceae.comI admonish you though – Geraniums and Pelargoniums are addicting , . Geraniaceae specialize in intercrossed types , and heirloom ornamental . These are the sort often seen only in collections in England or in botanical gardens but there is no reason why you ca n’t raise them in this means , too .

Joy Creek Nursery – interesting perennial , audacious and tender shrub that can be used in container too . Far too many dissimilar types of plants to list here . Go explore ( and spend ) .
Digging Dog Nursery – for rarified bush , container plants , greenhouse plants in the North , and summer container plants of which , I am trying many Kniphopia selections and species , since we are just out of zone for many . Digging Dog has a superb selection of many find no where else . They also have the most beautiful flora I hear last class – Salvia azurea , I saw it produce in a garden in Sante Fe . It ’s Morning Glory dark blossoms mould a cloud of lazuline – and bombilate in beloved bees . Still , I am going to try out this sky low beauty in a gage or in the rock garden .
Far Reaches Farm – Dare I admit that this is my favourite source of all , right now ? Not only peachy , unusual plants for containers ( at least for us here in the eastward ) , but this greenhouse comes close to the honest-to-god Heronswood , in that they often carry industrial plant found really at nurseries where there are Internet Explorer ’s . Woodland plant , woodies , perennials , fern , shrubs , alpines , bulbs , truly for the aggregator . Like the others sources here , the excerpt is random but all are incredibly interesting . They carry my belovedCardamine , which spread so beautifully in our timber garden . Crocossmia ? They have 45 types .

Kartuz Greenhouses – This is my go - to choice for tender greenhouse plants ( like Logee ’s ) but even more odd and interesting things – loads of gesneriads , unusual tropical shrubs suitable of a container and many begonias for that special collection that will look like Martha ’s . I am ordering aBakeridesia integerrimafor a pot , Begonia ‘ Earth timbre ’ , thisabutilonthat has colour like fire , they have Asclepias physocarpus – the ‘ Hairy Balls ’ flora which is always deserving it for a LOL garden mo , andClerodendron bungeiof which 3 establish in a 40″ bathing tub will out shine any container by late August , I forebode . It ’s what many botanic garden plant to set near their front entrances . constitute them in June , lift them and fertilise well . And Boom . You ’re welcome .
Cistus Nursery – It ’s hard to explain all that Cistus Nursery carries , but away from Cistus which we just can not uprise here in the North East , there are many plants to hunger for . I find treasure here that do well in the nerveless nursery , like Australian shrubs and trees , or perennial that will be hardy in my garden if sited well . A fine source for Agave ’s that no one else has shrubby Coprosma , Impatiens omeiana miscellany , Libertia for striking container , Opuntia varieties that defy verbal description , and lots of interesting succulent .
Logee ’s Greenhouses – What can I say ? So many enjoy at Logee ’s . A trivial piece of everything , and they are my neighbour . This Connecticut greenhouse is ancient , and most of my plants seems to hail from here .

Gossler Farms – A classic nursery know by many serious plant collector . Magnolia ’s are king here but so are rarified shrub , and perennial . Always , the fine selections for unusual plant collector . It ’s an obvious alternative if you live in the Pacific NW , but as many of these baby’s room are there , do n’t finger that these plants wo n’t live elsewhere . You may need to give them some protection , you may even need to just let them freeze down and substitute them in the saltation , as we are getting used to adding pinnace sub - tropicals like Brugmansia and alocasia to our garden now . Here in the Boston surface area , I have many plants from Gossler Farms plant alfresco , including a 20 year previous blooming Davidia invollucrata Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and some magnolia ’s , of which they are renown for . My Phormium , or New Zealand flax come from here .
For potted European olive tree Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , with many interesting motley which are often difficult to notice , trySanta Cruz Olive Nurseries . I have never ordered , but I keep this reference bookmarked for some understanding .
Plant Delights Nursery – Naturally , what can I say ? awe-inspiring . Plus , they haveBrugmansia ‘ Snowbank’this class – just about the most magnificent Brugmansia available , I think . On my Facebook Sir Frederick Handley Page you’re able to see a foliage of one I had 8 years ago in the masthead . It ’s a must - get , if it is n’t sold out . It is a assortment which is hard to receive , but the diversification is so showy , that everyone will ask you where you got it .

I am addicted to many works , but I have a mild patch for alpine and high-pitched raising plant . Many of you know that I am currently president of the North American Rock Garden Society , which I will be utter about soon in a succeeding position , but I want to share with you some sources for these incredibly interesting and often – drought broad alpines . Alpines is a all-inclusive term today , often encompassing most any works that will stay pocket-size , sometimes so little , that they are develop in hypertufa trough . dependable alpines are plants from the mountaintops of the world – high elevation plant that grow above the tree - crinkle ( you know , on the black diamond ski lead and above ) . One can get very geeky about such plants , raising them from seed , plant them limestone tufa rock , but one can also raise alpines which are practically care devoid – sempervivums and hen and chicks are true alpine succulents – I saw them farm high in the alp along with rare saxifrages . I ’ll publish more about rock’n’roll gardens and alpines soon , but until then , if you are bored with what you are growing , why not resurrect the bar ?
Wrightman Alpines – Harvey is a good booster , but this is a hunky-dory mail - club grower in Canada who ships to the US .
Arrowhead Alpines – One of the last stay nurseries who trade Primula allionii and other wanted plants . A wide of the mark selection .

Siskiyou Nursery – Well lie with in the North West , and a gold standard alpine and interesting plant glasshouse . Every alpine gardener shop here .
Sequim Rare plant – I just get word this jewel , thanks to a reader . They carry many of thosePrimula auriculawhich I write about recently a few posts back .
There are so many bulbs that you’re able to raise in pots , and it ’s something we often do n’t think about when pick up some 6 camp or geraniums at the garden center , but works such as lilies and gladiola ( especially the smaller species and relatives ) are perhaps even good when raised in mountain than in the garden . I ’ll share with you that after readingSarah Raven ’s Koran about Vita Sackville - West ’s Sissinghurstthis past autumn . I marked it up with lots of post - its about what incandescent lamp I could raise in pots , something she really promote . Like her , I ’ll be adding hatful of Tigridia , Sparaxis , Gladiolus mintage and Ixia to my summer container assemblage . But do n’t forget lily – go right now to your garden pith and buy a few just for pots – they are terrific grown this way . Just be sure to found them into the garden once autumn arrives , as they wo n’t outlast in hatful through the wintertime .

Old House Heirloom Bulbs – I really need to thank these guys for sending me a very nice gift this preceding fall – I have friends who swear by this Vermont nursery , which is well known amongst the collector crowd . Their catalog and web site is so tempting , and a mo like reading a catalogue from the 19th century .
Paul Christian Rare Plants – UK Here is what I arrange ( for the nursery really , but if you have one , these are laughably rare – as in – botanic - garden - uncommon . My ordering included Canorina , which is more of a winter houseplant , but I saw it on my wintertime slip to the UCONN greenhouses , had to dictate it now , I also suggest Dipcadi serotinum , which essentially is a brown hyacinth relative that can blossom at anytime , last year , mine bloomed in a stiff pot set out for the summertime – just interesting , dementedly rare and odd , I regulate some Ranzania japonica , because a Ranzania was featured on the covering of the North American Rock Garden Society quarterly this past winter , and many specie and selections of Roscoea , these relative of the ginger family that I interpret growing a duo of class ago in a Toronto garden some friends , and once I distinguish them in the alpine house at Kew , but just seek to ascertain any bulbs anywhere . I finally was capable to find some here this year .
Ruksans Bulb Nursery , Latvia – OK , super industrial plant geek site , but Janus has the good of many thing likeCorydalis solidaand garden bulbs for fall . Just list it here to remind you collectors that you often need to order early for late summer manner of speaking . I always forget !

Caladium bulbs4lessThis site may seem out of character for me , and I bang , it sounds like one of those site that would have bulge - up porn , but the bulb I put were nearly 7 in in diameter , and the lineament was incredible . You need to grease one’s palms in bulk , but I highly recommend them .
