In a Vase on Monday. October.

‘ They dined on mince and slices of Cydonia oblonga which they ate with a runcible spoon’ . ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat ’ .   Edward Lear .

My three year - old Cydonia oblonga tree , Cydonia oblonga‘Vranja ’ produced two beautiful Cydonia oblonga this twelvemonth . I have them on a dish and they make the room smell delicious with their fragrance . I thought I would use the big as an appurtenance for a contribution to the ‘ In a Vase on Monday ’ meme host by Cathy atRamblinginthegarden . I have n’t joined in as much as I would like with this popular meme because I am always loth to spoil my display in the garden . But now the weather has turned wet and cool I thought I could spare a few bloom and savour them in the home .

lily-white flower . I used a snowy rose which I think is probably a hybrid musk call ‘ Moonlight . It is bloom well at the moment . I picked a spray of my vestal whiteAnemone x hybrida‘Andrea Atkinson’ . A flower or two of the lovelyCosmos‘Purity ’ which   blooms for weeks as long as you remember to dead heading . Solanum jasminoides always goes on blossom until the frosts . Gaura lindheimeriis another dainty blossom which blooms on and on . It is so easy from cutting that I have it everywhere . Aster , sorrySymphiotrichum pilosumvar.pringlei‘Monte Cassino ’ , ( oh dear what a mouthful ) , is just come into bloom and I used a atomizer of it . I think I should have been a bit more generous and picked several spray . Last workweek Cathy used some Mile - a -Minute Vine , Fallopia baldschuanicain her arranging and I think it looked lovely . I race to sum up that I have never engraft this invasive plant and I powerfully suggest that you do n’t either . It keeps creeping over from my neighbour ’s garden and whenever I see it I rive it out in Erinyes . But this time I saved a scrap to piece .

jaundiced flowers . Mahonia x media‘Charity’ . PerennialHelianthus , I ’m not certain which one but it is very invasive . Corydalis luteawhich seeds around with great ebullience , but I always leave a little . It is blooming aside now as well as it did sooner in the class . Clematis tangutica . I used some of the yellow foliage ofChoisya ternata‘Sundance ’ .

silverish foliage . Rosemary . Artemesia‘Powis Castle’ . Phlomis fruticosa . Membrillo . Now for the Cydonia oblonga . I do n’t like mince and I do n’t have a runcible spoon . By the way , what is a runcible spoon ? But I have it away Membrillo which is made out of quinces . If you’re able to get hold of some quinces do try it , it is delicious . It is a Spanish recipe and it start very well with the Spanish cheeseflower , Manchego .

Recipe for Membrillo.1.8kg/4lbs quinces , peeled , core chopped . Vanilla pod . ( optional ) Caster sugar . pee . Put the quince bush into water and add enough H2O to spread over them . Put in the vanilla pod . ( Some recipes advise stinker . ) Put a lid on the goat god and boil for 35 -40 minute until the fruit is soft . Drain the fruit and then weigh it . Put it through the food C.P.U. . You then add an amount of dough equal to the free weight of the fruit . I know it is rather a lot . turn back it to the cooking pan with the sugar and stir over a low heat energy until the sugar dissolves . go forward to cook over a very humble heat until it is deep gold orangeness and has thicken . wrench on the oven to a very low heating system , 120 f. Grease a shallow baking tin and line it with greaseproof theme and smoothen the library paste into it . Leave it in the oven for an minute and it will come out set . It is delicious with tall mallow but I also like it on toast . Thank you very muchCathyfor hosting this popular meme . Next year I hope to get myself organised with a cutting garden so that I can join in more often .

Chloris your vase is jaw dropping … so many livid flowers this metre of year in your garden … .I really have it away the jazz band with the silvery foliage and quince too .

Ah , yes , I , too wondered what a runciple spoon was . Wikipedia has an interesting page on the meaning of the word . Chloris , you have a wide - ranging mind and your posts are always thought - agitating . We are able to purchase both membrillo and mancehgo for desert . Love it !

Lovely vase full – very full & wide-ranging as always ! I also have a 3 or 4 year sure-enough quince Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . A few fruit last year but none this unfortunately . I ’m impatient to have enough to make Quince jelly or perhaps your Membrillo .

Well , you may not put together a vase on a regular basis but , when you do , it ’s a lulu . I sleep together every element . I miss my own white sea anemone , which seem to be a no - show this yr . I ’d forgotten how much I like Solanum jasminoides and believe I ’ll have to receive a shoes for it in this garden . I have n’t thought to issue rosemary ( which I have a lot of ) for a vase , so I may slip that idea .

A most cool , elegant and stylish vase of flowers Chloris . I ’ve often ruminated about the runcible spoon . We are within five mi of a garden hold a internal collection of quince . They had an open day yesterday but I was otherwise enlist . We have been in the past though and it ’s ripe good afternoon out . I ’m sure that I could no make that should find way for a Cydonia oblonga .

I ’d never hear of Membrillo , but it look like it might be tasty . Your bouquet looks so professional . I particularly liked the means you included the Rosemary and the Mahonia buds . Wow , it ’s spectacular . I can imagine this arrangement greeting visitor to a reality - division hotel . Nicely done !

Your musical arrangement is gorgeous ! What a beautiful colour and textural combination ! A runcible spoon looks much like what we now call a spork and was used to eat fruit although they also look the same as ice cream fork to me . I also rarely slew flowers from the garden to impart indoors as they last so much longer in outside .

Ooh , I bet that vase has been giving you joy all week , especially if the weather has been dreadful and wet ! I ’m so looking forward to a time when my new quince bush tree diagram produces fruit – I had 2 lilliputian fruits this year but the kids here picked them off – grrrr . I made membrillo last year with chaenomeles yield , having read that they were very like quince . I think they ’re probably less perfumed and less pinkish . I ’m looking frontward to trying the real matter . There will be no such thing as a quince glut !
