Lavenders in general , take 8 hours of full sunlight , cracking drainage and skillful air circulation .

So to make your lavender happy , found it a very gay location , verify the   soil   dries out between watering and   depart blank space between the plant .   Lavenders like to bask and hate experience “ wet feet ” and   crowds !

Because   drain   is so critical , planting lavender in raised bed or in containers with lots of drainage holes is a great idea . take a big container as the stem systems of these works are much bigger than the plants themselves .

Ca n’t hurt to add in a level of unaffixed gravel at the bottom of any container housing lavender to further increase drainage .

Lavenders in container or the ground love life being mulch with pea crushed rock or rock music as well . This keeps the pate of the plant dry out the way they wish it .

Best Soil & Watering for English Lavender

A “ fluffy ’ aerated soil is opt by English Lavender . Makes sensory faculty , flop as they like it dry .

The best grunge is a combination of peat , vermiculite , and   perlite .

Pruning English Lavender

I always wish to know the “ why ” of things . Why prune lavender it seems to look pretty beneficial all the time ?

The “ why ” of pruning lavender is to prevent it from getting too woody .

You see lavender is a semi - bush . It is likely a merely a perennial with its soft greenish / grey foliage , but once set up it will get woody at the core .   A lilliputian wood is okay   but too much and your plant life wo n’t live on .

The destination of   pruning   your lavender is to slow down the physical process of the soft gullible leaf turning to forest with age   and advance new growth .

Start early with new lavender plants . Pinch off the tips after flower to encourage new shoots and shape .

Once established , rationalize your lavender hard once a class . These are hardy , forgive   plant   so timing is not highly critical , but the best sentence is after unfolding .

Since all lavender blooms on new growth stems , your windowpane for pruning is after flower thru mid spring without sacrifice this year ’s blossom . So get to it when you may .

Prune 2/3 of the works . But do n’t go down to the former wood . A good dominion of thumb is to rationalize down to the 3rd lymph node above the wood .

Locate the third guest ( the little bump on the stem from where leaves / flowers grow out of ) and trim back above it . Again , lavender is forgive , so you do n’t have to be this exact . Just a cosmopolitan rule of thumb ~green thumb!Pruning back hard will further new growth and forestall “ urban sprawl . ”

“ Sprawl ” is when your lavender plant life get so big it flops open from the middle . Not attractive!Prevent sprawling by prune 1x a year by 2/3 .
