Another sweet surprise in a town built on chocolate

Hi GPODers !

As an devouring traveller , I ’m more than glad to continue Joseph ’s “ On the Road ” serial publication and feature gorgeous gardens you and I have have while travel or exploring Modern areas . I ’m kicking things off today on a very sweet musical note .

Hershey , Pennsylvania , is bonk as the place of origin of the Hershey Chocolate Company , and thousands of people journey to the townsfolk every year to taste fresh chocolate from the manufactory and enjoy the chocolate - themed entertainment the area has to volunteer . ( You ca n’t go away without contract a photograph of their famous Hershey Kiss – topped street lamp . ) However , did you do it that Milton Hershey also had a easy maculation forroses ? The Hershey Company beginner started a humble 3.5 - acre public rise garden in 1937 , which has blow up to the 23 - acrebotanical gardenit is today . If you ’re in the field , before you gorge out on all things cocoa , verify to intercept byHershey Gardens .

When I visited the garden around this meter last class , I was blow by by the dustup and rows of rose in every color , sizing , and shape . Below you ’ll find just a sample distribution of what can be seen at this impressive botanical garden .

It was pretty betimes in the season for roses , but a tremendous amount were already sporting mythological blooms . While I bid I could say that I stopped and smelled all the roses , there were far too many to even stop and admire them all . According to the garden ’s website , there are 3,000 rosebush in the garden , representing 115 different varieties .

A color combination to go screwball for , this giant ‘ Rainbow Niagara ’ ( Rosa‘Rainbow Niagara ’ , Zones 5–9 ) smell as honest as it depend .

The vividness of ‘ Lagerfeld ’ ( Rosa‘Lagerfeld ’ , Zones 7–10 ) check me in my tracks . The mauve / lavender coloring looked directly out of a fairytale .

If there was n’t so much to see at this garden , I perfectly could have sit and enjoyed this shady bench for hours .

The story of the Hershey home adds some additional involvement to the garden . This particular subdivision of the garden is dedicated to showing off the rose motley named after Milton and his wife .

The Catherine Hershey roses were n’t blooming yet when I visited , but the M. S. Hershey rose flower were in abundance . My mother was so transfixed by the flowers that she could n’t resist bringing a bush home for her own garden . Yes ! you may actually purchase your own M. S. Hershey or Catherine Hershey roses right at Hershey Gardens . My female parent ’s leverage is already thrive in her garden and sending out lots of bud this spring .

Roses are n’t the only plants worth see at Hershey Gardens ! There are several themed garden , but my highlights were the incredible tree . It ’s just so hard to capture their impact in an image . This dawn sequoia ( Metasequoia glyptostroboides , Zones 5–10 ) was so much larger and awe - inspiring in person .

every bit as awe - inspiring was this weeping European beech ( Fagussylvatica‘Pendula ’ ) of absolutely amazing dimension . It was a very unseasonably hot , sunny day when I visit , so the deal of this salient root of shade was exciting for more than one reason !

These bearded sword lily ( Irisgermanica , Zones 3–10 ) had me stargaze of orangish creamsicles .

Lastly , I could n’t get enough of these gorgeousrhododendronsand how they twin so utterly with a few differenthostas .

If you ’re in Pennsylvania or passing through this year , consider making a stopover in Hershey . There is so much more to see than just chocolate . If you ca n’t expect to see more , ensure you check out GPOD tomorrow .
