I ’ve been involved in a very interesting undertaking recently , which is helping transform into English the site of an Organic Dutch Rose Nursery run by in force friends of mine .   Now before you start thinking I ’m some kind of language whiz kid my parent are Dutch so I interpret the nomenclature fairly well and Google Translator is a great tool !

The greenhouse is calledBierkreekand they are , to their noesis , one of only two organic roseate nurseries license by the European Union .   What I especially bask about doing this is I am learning a lot .   And more often then not I ’m caught totally by surprise by something new .

The most surprising one was when I was translating a department on beneficial insects .   I got into a department that seemed to say for control thrips on roses you take aphids .   Aphids ! ! ? ? .

My nous would not enwrap around this opinion so I called Geertje .   “ Google translating program is translating this section to say you need aphid to master thrips ” .   “ That is right ” total the positive , unagitated reply .   “ What ? ! ” was my less than literate response .

Geertje then excuse it to me and I ’m kick the bucket it on to you .

There is a little worm called the hoverfly .   I ’ve been learning a lot about them because they are all over Bierkreek ’s website .   They are very beneficial to roses as are lacewing fly and lady bugs .   In early spring these louse lay their egg very closely to where the aphid are .   The larvae that hachure eat aphid and then turn over into adults .   They then lay their eggs and those egg hachure when “ thripid season ” starts .   This 2nd multiplication of larva provender eat , you guessed it , thrips !

So if you spray for aphids too soon in the season the first generation of larva will not have enough to feed , they wo n’t turn into adults and place the 2nd generation that eats the thrips .   That is why aphids are an important part of controlling thrips .

Now I recognise no one like an aphid plague but keep this in mind .   You credibly have an aphid infestation on the button because you spray for them .   spray for them does not attract those good worm because they have nothing to deplete .   Would you go to a eatery with no food ?

Like with other aspects of weaning roses off chemicals it takes time for nature to touch on the balance we ’ve trouble .   So yes , the first season you may have more aphids than you care for .   But over clip this will balance itself out and while you ’ll have some aphid the good insects will keep a nice equilibrium .

I personally know this works because I never apply insecticides – not even organic one .   I ’ve never had lots of aphid and frankly I ’ve never thought about thrips because I ’ve never seen them on my pink wine .   And thanks to Bierkreek now I recognize why !
