Preserving plant diversity in the subtropics

Erika Shank of   Amagansett , N.Y. , recently visited Florida and portion out these image from the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden just in the south of Miami . This 83 - acre botanical garden ’s main mission is to preserve plant life biodiversity , and it house extensive collection of rarefied tropic plant , with a particular focus on palms and cycad . The garden is named after Dr. David Fairchild ( 1869–1954 ) , one of the most noted plant adventurer in history .

Botanic garden like these are not only great vacation destination ; they are also key to preserving divers industrial plant , many of which are jeopardise in their native mountain chain .

What could be more tropic than these palm trees reflect in the body of water of Pandanus Lake ?

Part of the cycad collection . Despite looking like palm tree , cycad are really more closely associate to conifer and Ginkgo biloba . This ancient group of plants appears in the fogy disc of some 280 million age ago ! The individual plants can also be very previous , with individual specimens know to be more than a thousand years old . Part of the medal aggregation at the garden .
