It is time to celebrate the gloam harvests at festival across the land . This class , September 23 is the nightfall equinoctial point : a time when 24-hour interval and nighttime are adequate in length — both 12 time of day . Now we are head into shortening days and longer night . This is the seasonal rhythm method of birth control that we go through every year ; the end of summertime take into account us to say farewell to hot weather and receive novel air and tank temps . It also signalize the lag of garden produce — it is a clock time to be grateful for a bountiful harvest — and make quick for the cold weather to come . Since the weather condition is cool , we are require to eat on heartier dishes , such asBaked Red Cabbage with Spices .
I am writing from Mountain View , Arkansas , where we are getting ready for the annual HerbHarvest Fall Festival(September 30 to October 1 , 2011 ) at theOzark Folk Center . For the past few years the melodic theme has been nation around the Mediterranean , where many of our grey and green herbs originate . This year we celebrate the herbs , foods and culture of Israel , Syria , and Lebanon . you may match out theschedulefor the two - day event , as well as the carte for our Sumptuous Herbal Supper ( which is sold out with a hold list ! ) . The Skillet Restaurant and the Ozark Unit of the HSA put on an amazing shindy featuring seasonal herbs and grow . The cabbage recipe is one that I created for part of our Mid - Eastern Mediterranean dejeuner on Saturday .

We have many marvellous speakers coming to do programs . Jo Ann and Jigs Gardner are coming from the Adirondacks to speak on “ Gardens of Use and Delight ” and “ Solomon ’s Garden : The scriptural Roots of Holy Land Flora ” . I am activated to fill them since I have all of her books . Local butterfly expert Lori Spencer will speak on “ Concerning Butterflies : What is in a name ? ” and gardening buddies Kathleen Connole and Paul White will inspire us with “ Creating the Garden of your Dreams in the Ozarks ” . Mary Nell Jackson is labor from Texas to evidence us about “ The Secrets of Saffron ” and head nurseryman and herbalist at the OFC , Tina Marie Wilcox will inform us about “ Calamus , an Herb of the Middle East and the Ozarks ” . I will be doing cooking demos both daylight — Friday is “ entrance the Essence of Roses ” featuring our approaching herb of the twelvemonth for 2012 — and Saturday is “ The Mid - Eastern Mediterranean Table ” .
If you ca n’t make it to this consequence , find something local since there are garden festivals happening everywhere . Keep next twelvemonth in psyche when we travel to North Africa and Egypt ! Meanwhile , get out there and assemble the garden harvest home , visit your local farmers ’ food market and keep fall !
