Earth Day EVERY DAY!

We celebrate the fiftieth anniversary ofEarth Daydifferently this April 22.This time , we honor its mission in what may be the most meaning means : recognizing that we can make a big difference in our yards and neighborhoods . Not so long ago , we could irrigate whenever we want . On summer eve , we relaxed to the whap , whap , whap of lawn sprinklers .

Now , tearing restrictions and our own awareness chair us to plants that get along without that invariant extract , just as our forebears did , and certainly as many do stateside and globally today . Bee - engaged native globe mallow ( Sphaeralcea ambigua ) does n’t mind dry times . My wintertime - audacious Mexican stonecrop ( Sedum mexicana ) withstands drouth just all right , spilling its container to root and diffuse . Salvia ‘ Silke ’s Dream ’ , a crossbreeding betweenS. darcyiandS. microphylla , chimes in with deep - throated blossoms to tempt butterfly stroke and hummingbirds . Although vegetable garden must be watered , specially in summer , we ’re go for drip irrigation , often seize to pelting aggregation . Plus , we ’re wreak food - grow right out front again . Well , at least if you ’re fortunate enough not to inhabit in an HOA that ’s still stuck in suburban 1950s . alternatively of killing every insect in sight , we understand how pollinators and bird are impacted by pesticides , too . When winter ’s plants thunderbolt in the heat , like broccoli and this cilantro , we let them flower for bees that pollinate our summer crops . We’ve come up to respect that allowing a blighter - to - predator balance attracts the beneficials we want like ladybird beetle . This one ’s about to luncheon on aphids! And by planting for wildlife and crossing off pesticides , we can fill the garden with lightning bug , butterfly stroke , skirt , and bees . I keep myAbutilon palmeriin a sunny side terrace container and give it a cryptic drench weekly in summer . Rather than tossing thing into the trash , we ask ourselves “ Hmm , what else can we do with it ? ” I call this “ shopping in the shed . ”Especially now , we ’re appreciate how simple beauty and fragrance at home give us joy . you may even have pink wine , like my Buff Beauty , and otherEarth - Kindroses that do n’t necessitate spoil . This workweek onCentral Texas Gardener , Thomas Rainer ’s message to create resilient , emotionally - resonant landscapes is especially appropriate . A landscape painting designer withPhyto Studio , he joins John Hart Asher to explore how we can make visually and environmentally symmetrical garden with concepts from his bookPlanting in a Post - Wild World : Designing Plant Communities for Resilient Landscapes . keep an eye on now !
