Geranium as a perfume and flavouring is very much in style . Its complex , warming , acerb note are being employed by enlightened craftsman to infuse everything from coffee to gin . My preferred summertime smell , “ Geranium pour Monsieur ” by Frederick Malle , combines the eponymous ingredient with cloves , cinnamon , clean musk , stack and sandalwood . To spray it on in the morning is like stepping into a humid glasshouse early on a summer solstice ’s day . It ’s the everlasting find fault - me - up and never fails to get multitude asking what I ’m wearing .
Naturally , the first plant life I require for my own glasshouse was a scented - leaf geranium . As luck would have it , I found a diminished cutting ofPelargonium papilionaceum , a South African native , for sales agreement at Marwood Hill last springiness . I mistakenly believe it would enjoy a sunny windowsill in the house whilst I refurbished the glasshouse at Polegate Cottage . This quickly dried out the compost and brown the edges of the tremendous , pugnacious foliage . I then did what I should have done in the first representative and looked it up on the cyberspace , only to discoverPelargonium papilionaceumis a plant of wood fringe and nerveless current banks . Moved into a shady but warm berth it has mature smartly , throw fragrant leaf into the glasshouse ’s central way for me to brush against .
I encounter the scent heavenly , others notice it harsh . In Afrikaans the unwashed name is “ rambossie ” referring to the olfactory perception of the leaves which some describe as alike to the scent of a he - goat . Oh dear . Now I wonder if masses ask what I am wear for all the incorrect reasonableness ! No matter , it pleases me and I still have some friends . And the peak , which are being produced for the first time this natural spring , propose to me little pinkish fairies with oversized wings . The scent is the principal case , but the flowers are a smashing bonus . In summer I plan to stand my plant life outside somewhere shady before I hit the hay it to our new garden elbow room where our client can comment , favorably or not , on the extraordinary , tart , dry , spicy , masculine fragrance .

genus Pelargonium papilionaceumis available from geranium and fern specialistFibrex Nursery .
