A couple of week ago we planted a bottom of daikon radishes from the seeds we saved in spring :
The radish were a intermixture of big Japanese Japanese radish types with Johnny ’s “ Red King II ” intercrossed Raphanus sativus longipinnatus .
There were also some white ball - shaped daikons in the mix . Who know what we ’ll get now !

We just develop a or so 4′ x 6′ patch of mixed eccentric until they went to seed , then saved the seed .
Now we have planted them for the second prison term this year , taking advantage of the cool weather to see if we can get a harvest home before the hard freezes come .
We planted them in plain grunge , then mulched with some of the compost we made from a intermixture of run out bread and hay .

It ’s been so ironic that the compost did n’t stop down completely , yet it makes nice mulch .
I originally wanted to go forth the intact area cover in mulch , yet when we pulled our honeyed potatoes there were a heap of weed mixed in so we simply raked the mulch off the total area and weeded it , then made a duad of raised beds , planted them , and now we ’re re - mulching .
The worst of the smoke was Bermuda grass , which has a way of guide through mulch and cockle it all together . Though it would have been ideal to keep the ground shroud , we live in an imperfect world , so we merely through the mulch and the Bermuda Gunter Grass and other weeds over the fence to the chickens and take off with a clean slate .

It will be fascinating to see how these radish change state out . The Red King II hybrid is a really fantabulous Raphanus sativus and I desire its genetics can be contain over into a stable open - pollinated change .
I likely should n’t have mixed multiple other radishes with it , but it ’s too late now . We ’ll vagabond the die and see what come about .
All the radish we harvest were fairly good this yr . Perhaps we ’ll get an even better wash over time which is adapted to Lower Alabama .
