Gardening around a house that is over 200 years old
Today we ’re in the town of North East , Pennsylvania , visiting Charlene Kerr ’s garden .
We are settle on the south shore of Lake Erie , in northwesterly Pennsylvania ( even though the townsfolk is identify North East ! ) . The lake provides coolheaded springs and warmer falls , realize it ideal for grape vineyards and cerise and appleorchards , and our gardens . We began gardening when we purchased this home , which was set about in 1796 . In 2005 , we removed a 100 - year - old summation , put on a unexampled addition , restored the 200 - year - old portion of the home , then commence regenerate and sum up to the garden . We addednativeand singular plants with the assistant of Brett Maloney Landscaping .
Fringe tree(Chionanthusvirginicus , Zones 3–9 ) and an former spirea(Spirea prunifolia , geographical zone 5–8 ) accent the two - level deck that overlooks Lake Erie .

A ‘ Tricolor ’ beech tree ( Fagussylvatica ‘ Tricolor ’ , Zones 4–7 ) protects ‘ Johnson ’s Blue ’ geraniums(Geranium‘Johnson ’s Blue ’ , Zones 4–8 ) and daisies .

The first purple irises(Irishybrid , whiskery mathematical group , Zones 3–8 ) flower around the gentlewoman statue , along withhostas , the last of the daffodils , and paeony .
