Remaking a boring yard into a gorgeous garden
Today ’s photos are from Larry Rodgers .
We moved into a contractile organ ’s house in the Willamette Valley in Oregon a ten ago that had been landscape with a mingle-mangle of leftover shrubs and Tree from other projects .
A poorly tack together careen wall did nothing in Oregon ’s rainy climate to keep pee from draining toward the house , which had led to major wet problems in the crawl space and a backyard that was a muddy peat bog six month out of the class .

Needing to address drainage and wanting a major garden makeover we could do ourselves , we reached out to a local garden declarer to design and work up what turned out to be a beautifulstone wallover a French waste pipe that routed the weewee around the house .
The contractor ’s crew empty the yard , except for one lonelyJapanese maple(Acer palmatum , Zones 6–9 ) languishing in a corner , which was transplanted in front of the new rampart . They improve the ground , planted several decorative cherry red Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and different Japanese maples , laid turf , and created a stone course to provide a perfect starting gunpoint for a backyard - sized garden .
We hired a local fashion designer to bring home the bacon a backdrop offoundation plants , with instructions to “ make the horrible fencing disappear . ” She gave us a plan that permit us to go to oeuvre assembling a range of eclecticgarden rooms .

With these as innovation , we spent six age filling in the elbow room withfruit treesand bushes , small shrubs , perennial , and vegetables , with annuals on the deck in mass and corner to add color .
Our eastern United States - face backyard offers a shady photograph for plants such as this ‘ Bottle Rocket ’ ligularia.(Ligularia‘Bottle Rocket’,Zones 4–9 ) .
Shady areasalso featurehostas , with over 50 different varieties at last tally .

Prior to arriving in the Willamette Valley , we live for 20 years on the Kansas prairie . With searing heating plant , wind , unruly insects , and dispute winter , home horticulture there is about kick upstairs tough , battle - tested plants likeyarrows , sages , and echinacheas , which all boom with piddling water and less care . Having not quite adjusted to living in a close - perfect garden clime , we continue to overplant and trim back back less vigorously than we should , leading our garden rooms to occasionally develop out of control . But what could be a good horticulture challenge than adapting to plant that grow too well ?
