Life on a farm is in use , whether you ’re make a go of it full time or fit your farming between other jobs that make up measure . The step of activities can be hectic as you hoodwink multiple projects and endeavor to tweet as much out of every day as you’re able to .
But once in a while it ’s good to model back , rest for a moment , and just appreciate the beautiful nature that your farm offers .
A Beautiful Day
As I type this , it ’s a beautiful drop twenty-four hours in belated September . It ’s sunny and warm , but not too hot—78 degrees F. The sky is cloudless . I ’m sitting in an Adirondack death chair under the glorious full shade of a sugar maple tree in full fall color .
I ’m up at the top of my farm ’s orchard , at the peak of a hill overlooking a hoi polloi ofyoung apple , plum tree and pear tree .
I ’ve been model here for an hour , enjoying the beautiful weather on what might be one of the last summer - ish days of the year on mynorthern Wisconsinfarm . I should really be lend brisk compost to garden beds in readying for wintertime . I also need to give the fields one last mowing . But instead , I ’m just sitting , enjoying the view and soaking it all in .

Nature Emerges into Quiet
usually when I visit the orchard , I ’m on the go — watering tree diagram , tend autumn pumpkin , refreshing mulch , or at the very least taking a paseo with syndicate and ally . It ’s rarefied for me to sit stationary up here for more than a few minutes .
But when I do — as I ’m doing today — I’m always struck by how quickly nature emerges into eyeshot , as though I ’ve melted into the surround of my farm . Critters and wight yield me no creative thinker .
Across the railyard , a gray-headed squirrel and a fatal squirrel record hop through the grass , hunt for — what ? Maple seed , perhaps .

Behind me , I can hear a larger brute walk through the woods — in all probability awhitetail deer(there are so many ) , though I ’m hesitating to turn around and check . I do n’t require to scare it away .
Overhead , a bird chirps repeatedly in the maple . A caterpillar descends on a silken thread from one of the branches .

Sit Longer, See More
The longer I sit , the more things I see . A couple of small birds wing preceding , roll smartly on this largely windless day . A moth flutters by in the opposite guidance , blazing a restive trail across the sky .
The blackened squirrel edges nigher and closer , his feathery tail upright as he bounces within 6 feet of my chair . I turn for a expert look , and he spooks slenderly . Did he even know I ’m here ?
Other than the periodic chirp of birds and squirrels , there ’s scarcely a sound to be heard . Across the sky , I can see a jet sheet allow for a cloudy trail in its aftermath . But it fly so gamy I ca n’t hear the rumble of its passing .
The route along the front of my farm is hidden from view nearly a quarter mile to the south of where I baby-sit . dealings — what little there is on a Wednesday in this rural county — can’t be seen or see .
Make the Effort to Do Nothing
So many days , I ’m out and about with tools and machines , making no small amount of noise as I fill out my farm projects . I derive a passel of satisfaction from these generative pursuit . But they ’re far from ideal for observing wildlife .
It ’s funny to think how follow the bird’s-eye beauty of an unending nature view requires the time and effort of doing no farm tasks … which is n’t precisely a small dedication from hectic farmers with busy slate .
That ’s why I ’m issuing a challenge to all the hobby farmers who read this : On a daylight when your schedule is a small light than common , choose a special bit on your farm . Then sit down and do nothing . Nothing , that is , except value everything around you , enjoying the sights , smells and sounds that come your way of life .
Do n’t bring any peter or task with you … except maybe a laptop reckoner for writing down your observations ( guilty as charged ) .
Give yourself an hour to delight a pleasant afternoon on your farm . You ’re restrict to number by refreshed , well-chosen and even humble . I know I did .
