The works collector Chris Chadwell wrote me today , to ask how the seminal fluid from his last collecting trip to   Tibet and Nepal were germinating , so I wanted to share this crack of some Jack In The Pulpits ( Arisaema metal money ) from the Himalaya were doing .   I believe I ’m all set in the Himalayan Arisaema department for now .

Sometime , I save my own seed , peculiarly when the plant is uncommon , or hard to find , such as this South African electric-light bulb plant known as Romulea . Like many Cape bulbs , the plant set ejaculate extravagantly , but the plant tend to get rather ugly ( or at least to non - plant hoi polloi ) before the seed pods dry . These pod are almost mature , so I localize the mickle on dinner plate , so that the source can drop onto the shell for easy harvest . Sometimes I am lazy , and sow the semen back into the same pot as the mature light bulb , which is OK with many South African medulla oblongata like Romulea , as they seem to like rigorous quarters , but also , I partake in come with rarified plant guild and their respective germ exchanges .

speak of uncommon source , some South African geophyte in my solicitation bring on very few seeds , like Clivia . These gems are ripe seeds from a variegated yellowness - flower Clivia ( worth about $ 1500 each on the black market – really ) . From Japan , we only have two of these plant life that we received from Mr. Nakamura . Red berry bring on orange clivia , yellow Berry bring forth yellow clivia , and these are yellow - striped seeds … … get the picture ? There might be 2 or 3 seed in each of these fruit , which take about 14 month to mature on the plant , before they can be sown .

Still planning for the moon border , these snapdragon seedling have been transpose into a dibbled power grid , and former fashioned method for graft seedling into a bombastic flat . I call up my parents doing this when I was youthful , especially with zinnia , marigold and snapdragons – those annuals that can palm being torn aside from their kin in a flat without much noticeable damage .   These white snap may seem little , steal recall , it is still April . With a difficult frost tonight , a lesson will be taught to those who have already purchased their tomato plant plant from the home shopping centre . I was blow out of the water at the annual and the heavy Lycopersicon esculentum plant that were available at Home Depot and Lowes last week – it is far too early to be planting any cutter annual yet . Memorial solar day folks , and that is 6 week away !

Amaranthus dislike any root disturbance , but I ’ve regain that an early start still helps plants survive , as seeds seeded int he garden directly , can be lose easily . It ’s always an impressive show – those diminutive , nearly microscopical seeds develop into monster within a few weeks , but the petite seedlings can get lost if sown in early June here in New England , as Mary Jane will quickly grow around them . If start up ahead of time , Amaranthus can endure transplanting if item-by-item seedling are slid from pots into prepared holes once the soil is above 60 deg . F. I find that the seedling organ transplant well when tiny . fear must be taken , for one can not retrieve Amaranthus at garden center , for if you do , they will be already too tumid , and they will go into shock an die once transplant , but if timed properly , a seedling can be stealthly transplanted as long as it is not too large by the end of May .

Speaking of annuals that one can not find at garden centre , Scabiosa must be mentioned . These seedling are quick to be transplanted from their 4 column inch pots into the garden where they will remain , blooming for most of the summer . These tap rooted annuals dislike any root disturbance , and since they will not bloom until mid July , they are seldom carry as 6 plurality annuals for sale at retail , as agriculturist know that a plant will no longer sell , if it is not in bloom of youth , so only the annuals that are engender for other bloom are carried by nursery . These , you will need to grow from source yourself . The wiry stems and long lasting bloom ranging from near blackamoor to pink , are a favorite of mine .
