Making art with plants
Today we ’re visiting the garden of Syd Carpenter in Philadelphia .
My 20 - year - old garden surround the sign on three sides with semi - shady garden rooms . Plantings focus on leaf colors , shapes , and textures , with flowers an sum up bonus . As a sculpturer , my garden is an extension of my studio oeuvre because I reckon plants as potentially expressive as mud , steel , or any other three - dimensional medium . I plan what might hap , but I understand that the plants and I are unforced collaborators . I am always surprised as the time of year work up . Some of my unspoilt plant collaborators are flame nettle , caladiums , genus Heuchera , Asiatic lilies , and hosta . Daylilies fetch high-pitched dramatic event and some flash during the hottest day of July . I combine the entire dodging with lots of enceinte ceramic pots take with annual , succulents , and perennial . Including various tropicals with the perennials and yearbook adds another bed of unpredictable pursuit when go from garden way to board .
Glorious peony(Paeonia‘Bowl of Beauty ’ ) flowers take center stage in the spring .

A place to stop and enjoy the garden in a nerveless , shady nook . I love the mirror window ride on the rampart above the bench because it dedicate the illusion of another garden obliterate on the other side of the bulwark . That bench is almost too beautiful to sit on !
lustrous annuals bring color in container , cooled down by a pipe bowl full of rich gamey ceramic .
A daylily ( Hemerocallishybrid , Zones 3–8 ) so dark bolshy it is almost black .

This complex planting of shrubs and perennial is highlighted by acute orange cosmos ( Cosmos sulphureus , one-year ) . The orange flowers look all the brighter for being surrounded by dark foliage and regal blossom .
A narrow track through the garden , under towering lilies , lead to a brick rampart deck with beautiful sculptures .
This mosaic roofing tile in the pavement adds a government note of color to a coolheaded , light-green planting .

With so many wonderful coleus varieties to choose from , why not mix up a clustering of different ones ?
