Today is the last twenty-four hours of April and tomorrow we will celebrate May Day – this retiring calendar month has been cold and slick here in Maryland – have had the woodstove going and the plant life babe cover . Hopefully May will in the end bring outflow for us impatient Mid - Atlantic gardeners !
Usually once spring arrives , we have both warm and coolheaded days – it is the nature of the time of year . However , this spring has been cold with little passion ; we ’ve had to have the woodstove going and the seedling cover and in the coldframe . So it seems we are have a late start for the garden season . No ‘ Early Girl ’ tomatoes have been sighted in these parting yet !

While coolheaded weather crops like garlic and onion are fare well , many harbingers are only recently bulge . violet , sorrel , mint , Citrus bergamia are showing out . The radish seed that I planted in the root moon hire off in just a few days and I have had to reduce them already .
The tiny salad putting surface that I bring home from my friend Deb ’s about two week ago have been hunkered down in the cold frame , which is open on cheery , warm days and close at dark . They have progressed nicely , are now hardened off , and will be quick for transfer as presently as the moonshine is good .
I institute some tender green transplants pick up at a baby’s room : some lettuces , spinach plant , and kale and they are covered with some blow row cover to protect them from the deer and the weather .

Do n’t be in a rush to get your ship’s boat tomatoes , peppers , eggplant , basil , etc . into the garden . They will not be happy if nights drop below 55 or 60 degrees F – they will just sit and sulkiness , so wait and countenance the earth warm up .
Enjoy the gardening season – here ’s to some warm cheery day – and happy May !
It ’s May , it ’s May … the merry month of May !
